Preparing meda for the Web

One of the appeals of the World Wide Web is that it can deliver all kinds of media content – text, video, audio, images, animations and more. However, delivering media over the Web raises special challenges.

On the one hand, people like rich media content. But they will not wait around forever for something to download. Text files are small and download quickly. Video files tend to be very large and by nature require a large time to download.. High resolution images are also large, and animations by nature work much like video.

As a result, any time we place any of these kinds of files on a server for delivery in a Web page, we must first manipulate the file in special ways to make it smaller. We are most concerned with image files and video.
